How Bad Was The Crime Rate in Toronto in 2019?February 26th, 2020 | by Radius Security | in Security
2019 has come and gone, and new statistics on crime rate are now available to be analysed. While Stats Canada has not yet published official figures for 2019, there are many unofficial numbers available that can be looked at. Unfortunately, 2019 was not a good year for the crime rate in Toronto.
The homicide rate is a reflection of personal safety in Toronto, and unfortunately in the last several years, this has been trending in the wrong direction. A quick look back to 2014 shows a total of 82 homicide victims in Toronto. Since this time, this number has trended in the wrong direction, with 96 in 2016, and 142 in 2018. Check out the link below to see official numbers from Statistics Canada.
While numbers for 2019 have not yet been published, many news outlets are advertising 2019 as being Toronto’s “bloodiest year ever”, with gun violence, and other violent crime on the rise. Never has personal safety in Toronto been of higher importance.
We can also look at overall crime statistics as an indicator of crime in Toronto. This has also seen a sharp increase in both the number of incidents, as well as rate per 100 000 population since 2014. 2014 saw 194 698 incidents, compared to 235 805 in 2018. The rate per 100 000 population saw an increase from 3273.82 to 3758.4 in the same period. This trend is expected to continue for 2019, and possibly into 2020. We will have to wait for statistics Canada to update 2019 totals, but so far, it does not seem positive.
It is not all doom and gloom, however, as Toronto is still considered one of the safest places to live in the world.
