Protecting Your Vancouver Marina from Thieves and VandalsJuly 24th, 2018 | by Radius Security | in
For boat owners, keeping their boat safe in the marina is top priority. According to studies, nearly 10 out of every 1000 personal watercrafts are stolen. Stopping thieves from stealing boats should be one of the main concern for a marina where boats are held. Marina owners and boat owners alike should look for the following safety precautions to help keep their valuables safe from thieves and vandals.
Using an alarm system in the marina and in the boat is the top thing you can do to avoid theft. Make sure that the alarm system you choose is reliable, easy to use, and covers all aspects of the boat. Additionally, the alarm system will need to be useable in potentially harsh environments – components should be sealed to protect against rain, wind, water, and sun.
A well-lit marina will deter thieves who won’t want to be seen. Motion sensor lights that flood the area with light upon sensing motion are a great idea to discourage thieves from entering the area.
Most boats that are stolen, are stolen when they are in an easy to move position – such as on a trailer. If boats must be left on a trailer, it is best to secure them to something sturdy such as by chaining it to a tree. When the boat is being stored on the water, don’t leave keys anywhere that is accessible such as the jockey box. If your boat has a dinghy, store it on the main boat if possible or use a locking cable to secure it to the primary boat.
Don’t Leave Valuables in the Boat
Valuable personal property should not be left on the boat. Electronics, fishing equipment, boating equipment, and any other valuable items should either be stored completely out of sight or not left on the vessel. If you are storing the boat, it may be a good idea to remove the registration and documentation of the boat and keep it with you.
For both marina and boat owners, protecting the boats from theft and vandalism should be high priority. Using these tips, boats should be safe when being stored. A thief will look for an easy opportunity – make your marina difficult to steal from, and thieves should stay away.
